The unfortunate situation is that I live in South Africa, and hybrids are near impossible to get, and rather expensive here. I really think all countries should be adjusting the law to make hybrids more affordable and easier to get. Its about time action is taken.

Most hybrids dont seem to be worth the expense quite yet. Maybe once gas hits $6/gallon. I also dont think they currently give 10-20mpg increase over their non-hybrid models. I see most having 6-12 mpg increase… which is significant, but certainly not 20.

If you look at all the externalities related to oil, the government currently subsidizes about $8/gallon. From the costs of world-wide protection of our refineries and pipelines, diplomacy, and transport of oil half way around the world. If they were to focus that into incentives for entrepreneurs and manufacturers, we’d reduce our foreign oil reliance very quickly.

Here's carbon footprint calc that's kinda cool... http://www.nature.org/initiatives/climatechange/calculator/
